Two Killed, Two Injured in Marksheffel Road Crash Near Peterson Space Force Base
A two-vehicle crash on Marksheffel Road Monday afternoon left two people dead and two others seriously injured, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.
The crash happened shortly before 1:40 p.m. Aug. 31 on Marksheffel Road, south of the Peterson Space Force Base East Gate. Police initially warned motorists that the roadway was closed in both directions and urged drivers to find alternate routes.
According to a preliminary investigation, a Toyota sedan was traveling southbound on Marksheffel Road when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and crossed into the northbound lanes. The Toyota then collided with a Chevrolet sedan traveling in the opposite direction.
Two people inside the Toyota were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Their identities are expected to be released by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office after their families have been notified.
The two occupants of the Chevrolet were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Colorado Springs police assigned their Major Crash Team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Investigators were expected to remain at the scene for several hours as they documented the crash and worked to determine what led to the vehicles colliding.
The crash also caused significant traffic disruptions in the area. Marksheffel Road was closed between the Peterson Space Force Base East Gate and Drennan Road while investigators worked at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation. Police have not indicated whether speed, impairment or other factors played a role in the collision.
Drivers traveling through the southeastern Colorado Springs area were encouraged to use alternate routes while the investigation and cleanup continued.
