COLORADO SPRINGS — A collision involving a Colorado Springs Fire Department engine and a Bustang bus sent nine people to area hospitals Saturday morning and temporarily shut down a busy downtown intersection.

The crash occurred shortly after 10 a.m. near the intersection of Bijou Street and Tejon Street. According to officials, the fire engine was responding to an emergency medical call when it became involved in the collision with the passenger bus.

Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene and evaluated multiple individuals involved in the incident. A total of nine people were transported for medical treatment, including the four firefighters who were riding in the fire engine at the time of the crash. Authorities have not released information regarding the extent of injuries.

The collision caused significant damage to the fire apparatus, which fire officials have determined is no longer serviceable.

The department has indicated that a reserve engine will be placed into service to ensure emergency response capabilities remain unaffected.

The intersection remained closed for several hours while investigators documented the scene and crews worked to clear the roadway.

The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Preliminary findings released Saturday indicated investigators were working to determine exactly how the collision occurred. Officials noted that the investigation remains active and details could change as additional evidence is reviewed.

No further information has been released regarding the cause of the crash or whether any citations are expected.
