Fireworks Enforcement Keeps Officers Busy During Fourth of July Celebration
While many families across the Pikes Peak region celebrated Independence Day with backyard barbecues and community events, the Fountain Police Department spent much of the evening responding to fireworks-related incidents as Stage 2 Fire Restrictions remained in effect.
According to the department, officers responded to more than 75 calls for service involving fireworks between 4 p.m. and midnight on July 4. Throughout the evening, officers issued 20 fireworks-related citations and confiscated hundreds of illegal fireworks as part of enforcement efforts aimed at reducing the risk of fires and protecting public safety.
The heightened enforcement came as dry conditions and elevated wildfire concerns prompted Stage 2 Fire Restrictions throughout the area, limiting the use of fireworks that could ignite grasslands or threaten homes.
Although officers remained busy throughout the holiday, city officials noted that many residents chose to comply with the restrictions and celebrate responsibly. Police thanked community members who followed the fire restrictions, emphasizing that voluntary compliance plays a significant role in preventing fires and reducing emergency calls.
With southern El Paso County surrounded by open space and grasslands that can dry quickly during the summer months, a single spark can spread rapidly under the right conditions. Fire restrictions are designed to minimize those risks during periods of increased fire danger.
The department said the combination of enforcement, public awareness, and community cooperation helped support a safer Independence Day celebration. Officials encouraged residents to continue observing fire restrictions throughout the remainder of the summer and to report unsafe or illegal fireworks activity when necessary.
As wildfire season continues, local law enforcement and fire agencies remind residents that responsible choices can help protect neighborhoods, emergency responders, and the broader community.
