Colorado Springs Police Launches AI-Assisted System to Support 911 Operations

The Colorado Springs Police Department is introducing new artificial intelligence technology into its Communications Center as part of an effort to help call takers and dispatchers process information more efficiently.

The AI-assisted system is designed to support communications personnel as they handle incoming emergency and non-emergency calls and coordinate responses with police, fire and medical personnel.

CSPD's Communications Center serves as a critical link between residents requesting assistance and the first responders sent to help. The center is responsible for answering 911 and non-emergency calls and dispatching public safety resources throughout Colorado Springs.

Under the new system, artificial intelligence is being used as an additional tool for communications staff rather than replacing the people responsible for handling emergency calls. Call takers and dispatchers remain responsible for gathering information, making decisions and coordinating the appropriate response.

The technology is intended to help employees manage information during calls and dispatch operations, potentially allowing them to spend more attention on the people on the other end of the line and the details of an incident.

That can be particularly important during busy periods, when communications personnel may be handling multiple calls and coordinating several incidents at once.

The department's Communications Center handles a wide range of calls, including emergencies requiring police, fire or medical assistance. Communications personnel also provide pre-arrival instructions to callers while responders are traveling to the scene.

Colorado Springs has continued incorporating technology into its public safety operations in recent years. The city has also invested in modernizing its computer-aided dispatch capabilities, with the goal of reducing redundant data entry and improving access to real-time information.

The addition of AI assistance represents another step in that ongoing effort to modernize emergency communications.

For residents, the technology will largely operate behind the scenes. When someone calls for help, the most important part of the process remains the same: trained communications professionals answering the call, gathering the necessary information and getting the appropriate resources moving.

As Colorado Springs continues to grow, the department's use of technology is aimed at giving those employees additional tools to manage the demands placed on the city's emergency communications system.
