Residents across the Fountain Valley felt the summer heat in full force this week as temperatures climbed into the mid-to-upper 90s, with some locations in southern Colorado reaching record-setting levels. The National Weather Service issued heat advisories for portions of the region, and Fountain-area temperatures approached the upper 90s and near 100 degrees during the hottest part of the week.
According to weather officials, Wednesday was one of the hottest days of the year so far. Nearby Colorado Springs reached 99 degrees, breaking a long-standing daily temperature record, while Pueblo climbed to 106 degrees. Forecasters reported temperatures near 96 degrees in portions of the Fountain area as the heat wave settled over southern Colorado.
Despite temperatures reaching as high as 96 degrees this week, there are still plenty of ways for Fountain-area residents to enjoy their summer. The key is planning activities around the heat and taking advantage of cooler indoor spaces during the hottest hours of the day.
Early mornings and evenings remain ideal times for outdoor recreation. Residents can enjoy walks or bike rides along local trails, spend time at neighborhood parks, cast a line at nearby fishing spots, or take advantage of golf courses and recreational sports before temperatures peak in the afternoon.
When the heat becomes too intense, families have several indoor options to escape the sun. The Fountain Library offers a cool and welcoming environment with books, community programs, and activities for children. Residents can also visit local recreation centers, fitness facilities, bowling alleys, restaurants, and shopping destinations, or take a short trip to nearby Colorado Springs to enjoy museums, theaters, and other air-conditioned attractions.
Many families may choose to combine both indoor and outdoor activities, starting the day with a morning hike, park visit, or fishing trip before spending the afternoon indoors. By staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen, and limiting prolonged exposure during the hottest parts of the day, residents can continue enjoying everything the Fountain Valley has to offer throughout the summer.
Health officials recommend drinking plenty of water, limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, and checking on elderly neighbors and family members during periods of extreme heat. Pets should also have access to shade and fresh water, and owners are reminded never to leave animals or children in parked vehicles.
The good news for residents is that temperatures are expected to moderate somewhat following the peak of the heat wave, although forecasters say additional hot days are likely as summer officially begins.
As Fountain settles into another Colorado summer, residents are encouraged to enjoy the season while taking sensible precautions to stay safe in the heat.
